While the most popular beds these days are seemingly memory-foam beds and hybrids – latex beds offer a lot of unique benefits that make them steadfastly popular, despite not having as much hype surrounding them.

So, what makes latex mattresses so unique? Well, they conform to the body, relieving pressure in a similar way to a memory foam mattress. However, they are much more responsive than foam-based mattresses and actually have a bit of bounce to them – which is important for intimacy. Furthermore, they are more durable than memory foam mattresses, and they sleep a lot cooler.

The best part? Latex mattresses are often more affordable than their memory foam counterparts.

Have we convinced you to give a latex mattress a try? Awesome! Don’t know where to start? No worries! Keep on reading for our list of the best latex mattress. Don’t like any of our choices? Never fear! We include a helpful buying guide at the end of this article so that you know what to look for when buying a latex foam mattress.

Amerisleep is known for their high-quality memory foam mattresses. However, they recently released a latex mattress called, Organica. Amerisleep’s Organica mattress has a soft, breathable cover made with organic, GOTS certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) cotton, guaranteeing it is free of toxic chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides.

Beneath this cover is a layer of New Zealand Joma Wool®. This material has natural moisture-wicking abilities, ensuring the surface of the bed remains cool throughout the night. Amerisleep’s wool layer also acts as a natural fire barrier, allowing them to forgo the use of toxic chemical flame retardants and fiberglass layers.

The comfort layer of the Organica features natural Talalay latex, backed by a 100 OEKO-TEX® certification, ensuring the foam was produced without any harmful additives. Amerisleep’s latex foam is responsive yet soft. The slight bounce of this foam keeps the hips and shoulders lifted and aligned to reduce muscle tension.

The Organica has a pocketed spring coil base to keep body weight evenly distributed, reduce motion transfer, and provide targeted support to the lumbar spine. Beneath this base is a 1-inch layer of Dunlop latex for added durability and shock absorption.

Amerisleep’s Organica Latex Mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a generous 20-year warranty that covers sagging and indentations.

The Awara Natural and Organic Latex Hybrid mattress is high-performing and eco-friendly, which is why it won our top pick as Editor’s Choice.

This organic latex mattress is simple in its construction – but all of the materials are high quality and well thought- out. There’s a lot of attention to detail, here. The top layer is a 4-inch thick slab of Dunlop latex, which is a very popular type of latex to use in the construction of comfortable beds. This latex is certified organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard, so you know you are getting a bed made of high-quality materials.

This bed has a medium-firm feel that gives it a little bit of contouring and bounce simultaneously, which makes it a great choice for most people. The support of this bed is made of individually wrapped innerspring coils – so it is going to be able to support customers who may be on the heavier side more than an all-latex mattress would be able to. A hybrid bed is a great pick for anyone who is worried about getting enough support.

The cover is very luxurious on this bed – which is one of our favorite features. It is woven from organic cotton and organic wool, making it both breathable as well as heat-dispersing.

One of the best parts about buying an Awara mattress is that the sleep trial is 365 days. That’s right. You get an entire year to test your mattress and make sure that it’s right for you. We think that is a great reason to test this one out.

Spindle’s latex mattress isn’t nearly as costly as most of the other ones on this list – which is how it earned the spot of our best budget latex mattress. Somehow, Spindle was able to make a quality latex mattress at a highly reduced price, so this bed is definitely worth looking at if you’re shopping on a budget.

The Spindle latex mattress is made of Dunlop latex and has an organic cotton cover to keep you nice and cool at night. This latex bed comes in four different firmness levels, so you can easily choose which one is going to be the best one for you.

The Avocado Green mattress is eco-friendly in so many different ways, which is what earned it the spot as the best eco-friendly latex mattress on the market.

There are two different ways that a mattress can be eco-friendly. The first is through its construction. It achieves this by using eco-friendly materials as well as using eco-friendly manufacturing processes in the construction and shipping of the mattress and the various parts that go into it.

The second way that a mattress is eco-friendly is by being highly durable. When a mattress is durable and stays clean easily, you are going to keep it for many more years than a non-durable mattress. This means that you are going to buy new mattresses less often, which means you are using fewer materials and contributing less to your carbon footprint.

The Avocado Green mattress achieves both of these things. Being eco-friendly and sustainable is one of the main missions of this company. If you have your carbon footprint top of mind, it is difficult to do much better than buying an Avocado Green latex mattress.

This hybrid latex mattress uses a zoned pocketed coil system that provides more responsiveness in the middle of the mattress, ensuring not only that the heaviest parts of your body feel supported, but also that the mattress won’t sag and dip in the middle over time.

You can choose from the medium and medium-firm options when you buy an Avocado Green mattress. While there aren’t as many choices as some of the other beds on this list, it will help to choose the softer option if you are lighter weight or like a more squishy bed.

The organic cotton cover, organic wool comfort layers, and organic Dunlop latex come together to make this mattress a high-performing and highly-durable mattress that most anyone would love to go to sleep on.

You can have your Avocado Green mattress shipped to you, free, in all 50 states. You can even use their White Glove service for a fee if you would like. Even better – you get a 365-night sleep trial and an insane 20-year warranty. Avocado Green certainly believes in the durability of its mattress.

The Birch is the latex mattress currently offered by popular mattress brand, Helix. This is an eco-friendly mattress, as well, and it is made of Talalay latex and layers of organic wool.

This mattress is great for someone who sleeps hot. The latex is highly breathable, as is the wool. These are both naturally cooling materials, as well, so you can feel comfortable at night if you live in a hot climate.

The coil support core of this bed aids in its breathability and cooling capacity while also providing a good bit of both responsiveness and support – making this bed a great choice for customers who are on the heavier side.

This medium-firm mattress is great for average-weight sleepers who like to sleep on their backs and stomachs. The Talalay mattress will provide quite a bit of contour as well, so side sleepers might find that they are comfortable on this mattress, as well.

The reason why the Birch mattress is our pick for Runner-Up is that it provides all of this in an eco-friendly package topped with the cherry of an affordable price. This hybrid latex mattress is one of the least expensive on this list, which is a little unbelievable for just how great of a mattress it is.

While this isn’t the cheapest mattress on this list, it is certainly one of the nicest. You get a great value when you purchase the Birch hybrid latex mattress from Helix.

When you buy the Birch mattress, you get a 10-night sleep trial to make sure that its the right mattress for you.

The Different Types of Latex

There are three different types of latex to be aware of. The three different types are:

Natural Latex

Latex that is all-natural is produced by the sap of a rubber tree. Natural latex has been produced from this plant sap since the 1930’s. There are two different processes to produce latex from this sap. You have seen us refer to both in this very article. The two processes are Dunlop and Talalay.

Dunlop is melted and stirred to allow sediment to settle at the bottom and leave a dense foam at the top. This is a little bit like the harder fats that are stuck at the top of milk when it is processed – which is what is used to make cream and butter.

Talalay is a little more modern in its process. It is put in a vacuum chamber and then frozen. This creates a lighter latex that is more even throughout it.

Synthetic Latex

Synthetic latex is made from petrochemicals. Most of the latex mattresses on the market today are going to use synthetic latex, if not in every layer.

Blended Latex

Blended latex is made of both natural and synthetic latex, which you probably already guessed. This latex needs to contain at least 30% natural latex in order to qualify as being labeled a blended latex.

What The Heck Is ILD?

ILD stands for impression load deflection and is one of the standardized measurements used to quantify the durability of different types and blends of latex. The amount of pressure that it takes to compress the mattress down 25% from its original height is what the ILD is actually measuring. This measurement will give you a good reference point for just how firm each mattress is – and how they compare to one another.

The ILD rating is a great system to be able to choose what firmness option is best for you. However, you might be wondering, what is the best firmness option for me and my sleep position? Thankfully, we have made a handy chart to help you determine what ILD rating you need.

Firmness Level ILD Best For
Very Soft
Less than 16
Back or side sleepers of lighter weight
Back of side sleepers of lighter weight
Side Sleepers of lighter weight
Side sleepers of heavier weight and stomach sleepers
Back sleepers of heavier weight, stomach sleepers
Very Firm
Greater than 39
Heavier weight individuals

The Pros and Cons of All-Latex Foam vs Hybrid Latex Mattresses

Now that you know what firmness level you need, you may be wondering what all the to-do is about hybrid mattresses and the innerspring coil systems found within hybrid latex mattresses. If you have the firmness level you need, who cares about the innerspring coils?

Well, coils provide more than firmness, and can also make for a more nuanced mattress.

For instance, if you need a firm mattress but like a soft comfortable feel, you can get that with a Talalay latex mattress top that is supported by dense individually pocketed innerspring coils. That way, you get the support that you need while also getting the squishy comfort that you crave.

While latex foam is naturally a bit more responsive and bouncy than memory foam, it is still a foam. If you are someone who is sexually active and likes to have a bit more bounce to your bed, a hybrid mattress is going to be much better at providing that for you than one that is made entirely from latex foam.

One downside to the innerspring mattresses is that, even if they are very durable, the coils will wear down more than the latex, which will shorten the lifespan of the mattress. If you want your mattress to last you a very long time, an all-latex mattress may be a better bet.

For heavier individuals, sexually active couples, or those who need some zoned support, we recommend getting a hybrid latex mattress. For other customers, you should be able to get an all-foam latex mattress that you enjoy and save some money in the process.

Why The Mattress Cover Matters

The material that your mattress cover is made from will greatly affect your comfortability as well as temperature while you are sleeping on the mattress. It is important to ensure that you are choosing a mattress that has a high-quality mattress cover made from wool and cotton, and no synthetic ingredients.

Wool disperses heat evenly and does not allow it to come through to the other side. It is also going to be water-repellant, which helps keep sweat and other body fluids from going into the foam of your mattress. Cotton is very breathable and highly cooling, so it is another great material for a cover.

Wool and cotton are the materials of choice for Irish Aran sweaters and Fishermen’s wear around the world. That is because they are cooling, insulating, water-repellant, and long-lasting.

The Health Benefits To Buying a Latex Mattress

One of the great reasons to buy a latex mattress is because of all the hidden health benefits.

One of the biggest problems with mattresses is that they are loaded with bacteria after only a short time. Your sweat and other bodily fluids seep into the mattress, and bacteria feed off of the salt and proteins contained therein. This bacteria can lead to nasty health issues down the line.

The moisture in the mattress can also lead to mold and mildew building up inside of your mattress. Many people are allergic to this, even if they don’t know that they are, so this is bound to affect your sleep and cause a lot of different health issues, as well.

One of the less-known facts about latex is that it is a natural insect repellant. While it won’t keep you entirely safe, this can make bed bugs and dust mites a little less likely than they would be if you had a mattress made of different materials.

If you are allergic to latex – don’t worry – you can still use a latex mattress. For starters, the cover won’t be made of latex, so it won’t come into contact with your skin. Secondly, you need to look for a 100% natural latex that is GOLTS certified. That type of latex has been stripped of the proteins that cause allergies – so you will be safe from having an allergic reaction.

How To Take Care Of A Latex Mattress

Like any mattress, taking care of your mattress is going to help increase its longevity and give you more bang for your buck over time. Not having to replace your mattress every couple of years is also going to be much better for the environment. Here’s how to take care of your latex mattress to give it a long and happy life.

Get The Right Base

The best base for any mattress is going to be a flat base. A slatted base is going to allow for some sagging over time, which you are going to want to avoid. Even worse, some slatted beds have slats that are spread very far apart, which is absolutely terrible for your mattress. A box spring isn’t going to have even and consistent support, so you should avoid using one of those on your latex mattress, as well.

The best thing that you can get for your mattress is a flat platform bed that is made of one continuous block or panel or many panels that are aligned edge-to-edge. If you already have a slatted bed frame, simply add more slats or put a thin panel on top of the slats to help disperse weight more evenly and keep your mattress from sagging.

Keep It Clean

Some latex mattresses cannot be professionally cleaned as the chemicals and heat used for professional cleaning are going to ruin the foam. It is important that you keep your mattress clean by not eating or drinking on it, except for water. Additionally, if messes cannot be avoided in your household, you should buy a mattress protector to increase the longevity of your mattress by keeping it clean.

Avoid Bedbugs

If you get bedbugs, you are going to have to throw the mattress away. If you are a sexually active person, live in a dense city or dorm, or are a rental host, you need to protect your expensive mattress from bed bugs. The best way to do this is to get a mattress encasement. You should make sure your home is sprayed for bed bugs on the exterior and trimmings every year, as well.

Rotate It

While most mattresses aren’t flippable because of the different layers, you can rotate your mattress head-to-foot. Rotating your mattress every quarter the way that your rotate your car’s tires will help it wear down more evenly, which will greatly reduce sagging and unevenness. Without sagging, you will be able to enjoy your mattress for many more years than you originally planned.
